Career Guidance
The Career Guidance Workshop Objective: The objectives of this workshop are to educate learners about personal career development, how to make good career choices based on personal strengths, values, interests and abilities; with an introduction into the “world of work” and “world of study”. Method: Learners will be given educative “lectures” as well as interactive practical individual and group activities and exercises to complete in a 2-hour group session.
Outline: · What is career guidance and career development?
· Importance of career guidance and career development
· Exercises on self-knowledge, with an emphasis on personality, values, interests and abilities
· Guidance on Job Applications (CV Writing, Finding employment, cover letters etc.)
· Occupational awareness and study option awareness
· For Grade 9s and 10s, there is an additional Subject choice section
· For Grade 11s and 12s, there is an additional Employment guide section
For University/College learners: First Year Experience / Employment Guide Booklet: Learners will be given an information pack on the workshop material so they can refer to the information at a later stage, and a Career Action Pack
Career Action Pack
Provide students with a take-home career guidance workbook that aims to
(1) facilitate insight into their personal career development
(2) identify a suitable career and implement a plan of action
(3) disseminate information about different careers, study options, bursary information etc.
Teachers/mentors can work with the learners on a one-on-one process to facilitate the process by following the step by step guidelines. A free CD is provided to each Grade teacher. If learners are from different schools and/or have access to their own computers/wish to have their own CDs, this can be included at an additional minimal cost. What? The Career Action Pack consists of a Workbook with a comprehensive collection of activities to provide students with career guidance and information to help them become aware of their personal career development and career and study options available post-school. The workbook has been developed for the purposes of career guidance and information dissemination. It is continuously updated keeping in mind new trends in the working and study world and as new information and materials become more accessible. There is a tailor made subject choice guide for Grade 9 learners.
